Pendleton County was established by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1787. The County Seat is Franklin, which was established in 1794. The County consists of 698 square miles, with 3 major mountain ranges having altitudes from 1750 to 4860 feet. It is beautifully landscaped with natural fishing streams, wild flowers, and unusual rock formations. The population is 8054.

While Pendleton County is a beautiful and quiet place to relax, it is also great starting point from which to explore. Nearby, you will find several ski resorts, World class whitewater rafting, Horseback riding, Museums, and enough trails to spend a lifetime traveling by foot or bicycle.

Seneca Rocks - 1,000 feet of vertical sandstone offering the best rock climbing in the eastern United States. Area includes hiking trail to the top, and the new Forest Discovery Center.
Spruce Knob - The highest point in West Virginia at more than 4,800 feet, the Spruce Knob National Recreation area offers 70 miles of hiking trails with outstanding views.
Natural Caves - With more than 55 documented caves (varied degrees of difficulty), Pendleton County's underground caverns fascinate both tourists and cavers alike.
Treasure Mountain Festival - An annual cultural event with plenty of good food, handmade crafts, entertainment, and history for the entire family. Held during the 3rd weekend of September, the festival draws more than 40,000 people!
